Moen Cartridge Replacement
I love "Moen" shower valves because they are so easy to repair. There is only one working part and that is the "cartridge." In this case we are changing out a Moen 1225 cartridge. To change it out, first shut off the water to your house and drain down the system. Remove the handle cover by prying up the edge with a razor knife or similar tool. Remove the handle screw with a Phillips screw driver. Remove the stop and cartridge retaining fork. You will need some fine pointed object to lift the retaining fork up. I typically use a o-ring pick or awl. Be carefull removing it and set it aside. At this time Moen supplies a breaking tool with the new cartridge. Position the breaking tool onto the cartridge and turn a few times to break the seal. The cartridge should pop out with a gentle tug with pliers. If not there is a Moen cartridge puller available to assist in this task. In most cases it is not required. Plumbers tip; Take a 3/4" fitting brush and clean out the valve boby of any debris. This will help insure the new cartridge fits cleanly. Install the new cartridge and re-install the cartridge retaining fork. With the stem pushed in, turn the water back on. Pull the stem out and flush the system. Turn the stem to orient the hot and cold sides. Re-install the stop and handle. Simple, easy and fast.
